Award disclosure date: 4 September 2024
Source: Portal do Conselho Coordenador dos Institutos Superiores Politécnicos (CCISP)

What is the goal and target audience?
Poliempreende aims to promote entrepreneurship in polytechnic higher education, encouraging the development of innovative ideas with the potential to become sustainable businesses. As well as stimulating the creation of start-ups, the competition strengthens the link between academic institutions and the market, thus contributing to economic growth at both regional and national level. It is aimed at students, teachers, researchers and entrepreneurs, as well as attracting investors and organizations interested in supporting projects with a significant social and economic impact.

What is the context?
Poliempreende is a consolidated national network for encouraging entrepreneurship in higher education in Portugal, with two decades of existence. Focused on promoting innovation, the competition has had a significant impact on the national economy, with the creation of around 100 companies, the registration of 100 patents and trademarks and the participation of more than 12,000 people over the course of its editions. In this 20th edition, the area of digital health stood out, with the first two prizes awarded to innovative projects in this sector, highlighting the crucial role of technological innovation in transforming quality of life and healthcare.

What are the winning ideas?
     1. First place: The MusclePen project, developed by Ana Gil Pinto, Inga Donici, and José Hermínio Gomes, from the Escola Superior de Enfermagem of Coimbra, presented a practical and innovative approach to the intramuscular administration of vitamin B12. Created to meet the needs of people with intestinal absorption problems who depend on regular treatments, the device allows self-administration at home, promoting greater autonomy and well-being for patients. This approach reduces the need for face-to-face consultations, relieving pressure on health centers and allowing health professionals to focus on more complex cases. With potential for application in homes and clinics, where caregivers can use it safely. MusclePen also improves accessibility to healthcare, making it especially relevant in remote regions or those with limited infrastructure.

     2. Second place: The Braining project, created by João Ribeiro and Nuno Almeida, from the Instituto Politécnico do Porto, proposed an innovative approach to the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients. Combining Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the platform offers personalized treatments that adapt in real time to each patient’s needs. Through interactive virtual environments, the system stimulates motor and cognitive functions, making the recovery process more effective and faster. With remote support, Braining allows rehabilitation at home or in clinics, reducing travel, frequent appointments and the burden on health services. AI integration makes it possible to continuously monitor patient progress and optimize resource allocation. The personalization of treatments and interactivity increase motivation, promoting higher autonomy, accessibility and quality of life, especially relevant for patients in isolated areas.

Who sponsors the awards?
