What is the goal and target audience?
The goal is to modernize the information systems of the SNS, particularly at the Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) of Coimbra, providing better working conditions for health professionals and managers of hospital units, as well as better care for the population.

What is the context?
With more than half a million hospital medical consultations carried out in the first half of 2024, the ULS of Coimbra stands out as an institution dedicated to integrated, high-quality and patient-centered healthcare, with 8 hospital units and 26 health centres.

SONHO, developed to support the administrative and clinical service of hospitals, is being replaced by SONHO v2, which brings more updated technology, better integration of information and new features, such as the identification of users by the citizen card.

SClínico Hospitalar is an information system developed by SPMS as a single patient-centered platform, intended to standardize clinical records and normalize information, facilitating access and sharing of clinical data to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

What is the news?
The 8 hospital units of the ULS of Coimbra have started operating with a unified administrative system (SONHO v2) and a centralized clinical system (SClínico) that will allow for more efficient management. This progress includes the integration of the Hospital Arcebispo João Crisóstomo, in Cantanhede, and the Centro de Medicina Física e Reabilitação Rovisco Pais, in Tocha. This integration began operating in the early hours of 27 July 2024.

What are the impacts?
The impacts of systems integration are diverse:

  • The unification of administrative and clinical systems allows for more efficient management of resources, reducing duplication and optimizing internal processes.
  • With a centralized clinical system, patients’ medical histories become easily accessible in all units, facilitating faster diagnoses and more accurate treatments.
  • The integration ensures that patients receive continuous and coordinated care, promoting a smoother and safer health experience.
  • The centralization of clinical and administrative data contributes to the reduction of errors, ensuring a higher level of safety for patients.
  • It allows for a holistic view of ULS’s operations and needs, facilitating strategic planning and resource allocation more effectively.
  • The ease of access to information for healthcare professionals and managers improves decision-making and the management of healthcare services.
